Are you feeling down or depressed these days? A number of people out there will agree that life isn’t the way they thought it would be.
We all dream of amazing times and great events, but only a handful of us are able to really get all that fun in our lives. However, for a lot of people, this gloomy outlook on life might be what we could call “second nature.”
Let us just begin by saying that the brain is a wonderful device. Feed it the same thing for a certain bit of time, and it will adapt soon enough.
This means that if you continue to feel low and depressed, it won’t be long before your brain will ease in to this phase. And soon, the gloomy outlook will persist, unless you make an active effort to change it yourself.
Now, there are a number of different strategies you can implement if you wish to change your outlook on life. It doesn’t matter how discontented you feel right now. All you need to know is that this is a temporary phase and it will soon pass.
In the following few paragraphs, we’ll talk about 10 of the most simplistic strategies you can implement in order to lift your outlook on life. Try one or a combination of several, but if nothing seems to work for you, it’s time to call your doctor to reach out for professional help. No one deserves to feel depressed or anxious all the time.
1. Meet Up With Your Friend Network
It is the duty of a friend to lift you up when you are down. Many people are usually loathed to sharing their troubles or worries with a friend. That should not be the case. Friends are there for a reason, and that reason is to make help lift each other up in times of worry.
Sit with your friends. It doesn’t matter if you have more than one. Share all of the worries that are bothering you. It might seem difficult at first, but trust us: Letting out your worries will help you feel better in the long run. It may even make you much more relaxed.
It has been proven therapeutic for a person to talk with their friends. Their support through times of difficulty will be of unparalleled importance. They have a different outlook and can provide solutions you may not have thought of. If you are shy, consider walking while talking to break the ice. Go to the mall or walk the neighborhood and let loose.
2. Appreciate What’s Around You
Perhaps the most important thing that you need to do is to just take a breather. Look around you and appreciate nature in all its true glory.
Stop and appreciate the wind blowing the leaves on the trees and look at the moving clouds up above. Listen to the chirping birds in the trees and enjoy the shine of the moon or warmth of the sun.
It is a beautiful world that we live in. And, the fact that you have become so down in your life can often leave you out of touch with the beauty around you. It has been proven that nature is therapeutic healer. The simplest things in life can leave a major and positive impact upon a person.
3. Believe in Your Working Self
If you are out of job and are becoming disheartened over the passage of time, don’t be. Bad times come and go. You will seize an opportunity eventually.
Always make sure that you keep your head held high. Keep focused on your future by learning something new and valuable to your profession.
You are going to achieve a goal, you can’t do so if you are negative. Remember, there are always options, so take a class, read a book or go to a seminar. If you can’t find a job in one field, try opting for another. You don’t know what’s in store for you, but it is always worth working towards a goal.
4. Walk, Fly or Drive to an Exquisite Place
The world is a beautiful, majestic place that is filled with different kinds of cultures and amazing people. You don’t know what you are missing if you don’t travel. Take a break from your working environment and get some time for yourself.
Go to a place you’ve always wanted to visit, like a foreign beach or a mountain resort. You will be amazed how similar and how unspeakably different people are from one another, even though we are all living under the same blue sky. Traveling opens your eyes and completely changes your outlook on life.
5. Close Your Eyes to Open Your Mind and Soul
We can’t stress enough the sheer importance of meditation if you want to change your perspective on life. If you want to feel good about yourself, you need to meditate. Now, we know you may be confused right now. How do you meditate? The answer actually, is quite simple.
Sit in a quiet, peaceful place, and then focus on one thing. It can be anything that makes you feel happy, peaceful and satisfied. Whenever your mind tries to wander from that one thing, and it will countless times, bring it back to focus on the same thing. This is all there is to meditation.
So, how does meditation help? Well, scientists have proven that meditation can not only yield long term benefits mentally, leading to a more secure and careful decision making personality. But, it also helps in other activities, such as weight loss.
6. Look to Your Family for Love and Support
When you have nothing else to live for in life, look towards your family. Gloomy people often forget that their family shares a bond that is irrespective of time and place. If you are away, call them up. If you are within the vicinity, visit them.
It might be your sister, your parents or your brother – it not, it can be an aunt, uncle, grandparent or even a long lost cousin. Whenever a worry bothers you, take some time off and visit your family. At first, many people will say that it makes them feel more ashamed when they visit their elderly parents with worries and troubles. However, that is not true. Family, especially parents, want to help their children and they will feel much better if you confide in them.
7. Write About Yourself
Take a pen and open a notebook or get a piece of paper. Then, write down all of the good habits that you have.
Also, list down all of the good deeds that you have done. It doesn’t matter if you had a chat with an old friend who was suffering, or you are extremely disciplined in whatever you do, just list it.
Often times, we continue to live our lives without thinking how it will affect others. By writing about yourself, you will be able to realize the positive imprint that you are leaving on those around you, and it will help you feel much better about yourself. We also tend to only see the negative in ourselves. By shifting to the positive, you’ll not only have a better outlook, you’ll see yourself in a better light, too.
8. Shake Your Body
Let us make that clear: this is not a strategy that will make you feel good immediately. If you are feeling persistently gloomy and your outlook on life has fallen considerably, it’s very likely that you binge or consume more calories than you should.
As a result, your weight is likely to increase. But, you don’t want that. It will only make things worse.
One of the best ways to improve your outlook on life and feel better about yourself is to exercise. It will not only help you feel better about yourself, but as your body becomes stronger, you will soon begin to look at things from a more positive perspective.
9. Count Your Blessings
Another way to feel better about yourself and improve your outlook on life is to start counting your blessings. Again, the best way to do this is to get a piece of paper, and start writing the amount of blessings that you have.
Write down everything that you have been given, from perfect senses to a complete, healthy body, and from a house to live in to plenty of food to eat. You get the picture. You can also jot down five good things about your day, such as, it was warm and sunny outside, or you ran into an old friend.
Write down everything that you appreciate, and then imagine the billions of people out there who are still devoid of these blessings. If that doesn’t make you feel better about yourself and help improve your outlook on life, it is unlikely that anything else will.
10. Flick Through the Pages of an Inspirational Book
You would be amazed at how your perspective on life will change if you just began to read. There are thousands of self-help books, as well as fictional and other non- fictional pieces of writing that can completely change how you think about life. If you can’t make it to the library or book store, go online to read an article or e-book. You have the inspiration you need right there at your fingertips.
Read about people who were stuck in similar positions, and how they got out of it. Autobiographies of average people and how they turned in to extraordinary human beings will leave you with a completely different outlook on life.
You might think that you are the only one that has been stuck in this situation, but that is unlikely to be true. By reading about others, you will be able to understand how they felt at the time, and how they coped with it. This will ultimately improve your own thinking and thought process, which will ultimately help in improving your outlook on life.
These are just some of the simple strategies you can incorporate in your life in order to change your outlook. Remember, nobody can change your life for you. You have to make a conscious effort to do it for yourself. Friends, family and all others can encourage you along the way, but it is you who needs to do the hard work.
Remember, if these negative feelings persist or worsen, no matter what you do, call your doctor and ask for help. They can find out why you feel so down, and then work with you to create an effective treatment program.
